Wright defeated Charlotte Catholic’s Daniel Tobben in a morning semifinal 6-1, 6-1 and then outdueled freshman Luke Synn of Hickory 6-0, 7-6 (5) in the championship match.

Grove and Robert Beal defeated Nickolus John and Dusty Roberson of Mount Airy 6-2, 6-3, on Saturday morning for the doubles crown.

John teamed with Matt Johnson last year and won the 2007 state 1-A doubles championship, beating another Mount Airy team that included his current teammate Roberson, who paired with Chase Pumerantz in the final.

In the 2-A, Pisgah defeated Chase and East Rutherford beat Smoky Mt, both by a 2-0 margin and Hibriten beat Owen 1-0.

In the 3-A, all four games ended with the loser scoreless.  The Roberson Rams beat the two-time state champions, the Kings Mt Lady Mountaineers, 4-0, Enka beat West Iredell, 5-0, Tuscola beat Randleman, 1-0 and Southwest Guilford beat Franklin, 5-0.

In the 4-A, Butler beat Reynolds, 3-0.

Roberson took two titles in the meet. 

The 3,200-meter relay team, consisting of Stephanie Chapman, Laura Hoer, Caroline Kirby and Kylie Smith, ran a blistering 9:25.56 to set a meet record for all NCHSAA classes. 

Senior Caroline Kirby took the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:22.50.

Asheville was also in the top 10, finishing 7th with 31 points. 

The Lady Cougars’ Sophia Treakle brought home two championships.  She set a state record in the 300M hurdles with a time of 43.15 and also won the 100M hurdles in 14.87.

Tuscola tied for 25th (8 points), Erwin tied for 36th (6 pts) and Enka tied for 41st (3 points).

The Greenies were the 4th seed in the tournament, drawing #5 Durham Academy and

Christ School fell behind early to Durham Academy, but only trailed 4-3 at the half. 

The Greenies took a 5-4 lead in the third quarter, but the Cavaliers tied the game at 5-5 to start the final quarter.

Durham Academy scored the only goal in the fourth quarter for the 6-5 win, although the Greenies had their chances.

They finished 10-5 on the season and lose 11 seniors off of this year’s team.
 

The win puts them into the finals for the second time in the last three years.  

They lost to Calvery Baptist in 2006 in the finals (best 2 of 3) 9-8 in the first game and 9-6 in the second game.

The Lions play the first game of the finals today at 4:00 against the winner of #3 Rocky Mount Academy and #2 Southlake Christian.

Game two is scheduled for 11:00 am on Saturday.  If a third game is needed, they will play again at 2:00.

In 1-A action, Polk County (17-6) defeated Hendersonville for the third time this season, winning 3-1, setting up a rematch against Bishop McGuinness who beat Polk in last years regional final.

In the 4-A, Audrey Kell stopped Reynolds for the second straight year, winning in the 75th minute, 1-0, in a defensive game.  Reynolds only attempted 3 shots, but had no shots on goal.
