–Brevard’s Andrew Blackwell hits for home run cycle in win over Pisgah

2 April 2008

CANTON - April 1, 2007 - You’ve heard of hitting for the cycle.  Normally it would be for hitting an single, double, triple and a homerun.

This is a different type of hitting for the cycle though.

Brevard’s Andrew Blackwell, a Western Carolina signee, hit a 1-run home run, a 2-run dinger, a 3-run homer and a grand slam in five trips to the plate in Tuesday’s 16-7 win over Pisgah.

The first homer, a 3-run shot to left center, came in the first inning.

After striking out in the third, he launched a grand slam to right center, then hit a solo homer to left in the sixth inning.

In the seventh, he hit his 2-run home run to right center

His 10 RBI’s and four home runs are both one shy of the NCHSAA record.  Shawn Gallagher from New Hanover had 5 home runs and 11 RBI’s on April 28, 1995.  Both Jason Huffman of South View in 1999 and Sam Simpson of Croatan in 2006 tied Gallagher with 11 RBI’s to share the record.

Gallagher is also tied for second in home runs with four, on March 16, 1995.  Tommy Greene of Whiteville accomplished the same in 1985 and the most recent before Blackwell’s feat yesterday was by Nathan Cockman of Northeast Guilford on April 8, 2005.
