–Blue Devils pick successor to Essenberg
5 February 2008BREVARD - February 4, 2008 - The search for a new football coach at Brevard is finally over. Mark Barnes, from 4-AA, Scotland County, has been approved as the next coach for the Blue Devils by the Transylvania County School Board.
He knows the area well, as his wife is a Hendersonville graduate.
Barne’s record at Scotland County is 135-57 over 16 seasons, making the playoffs 11 times and winning 3 conference championships.
He takes over for Dan Essenberg, who retired this past November after Brevard (8-5) lost to eventual 2-A state champion, Lincolnton, in the second round.
Barnes will be in Brevard on Tuesday to meet the team.
Barnes, who runs the spread offense, lead his team to a 10-3 record and into the second round of the playoffs, where they lost to East Burke.
