–Ten area schools in top 15 of Wachovia Cup Fall standings

RALEIGH - January 10, 2008 - Ten WNC schools, which includes Watauga from the Highlands, are in the top 15 of the 1-A, 2-A, 3-A and 4-A classifications for the fall sports of 2007.

In the 1-A, Hendersonville used their third straight 1-A Volleyball Championship along with their football team’s record to help finish in 5th with 125 points.  Hayesville and Robbinsville are tied for 9th with two other schools and Polk is tied for 15th.

West Henderson leads the WNC 2-A in 2nd place with 185 points, behind first place Cardinal Gibbons, who has 222.5 points.  The Falcons used their run with the boy’s and girl’s cross country teams, the volleyball, golf and tennis teams to place 2nd.  With their football and soccer teams reaching the playoffs, Owen (10th) and Brevard (11th) are in the running.

Both Asheville and Roberson are in the top 3 of the 3-A.  Last years winner, Roberson (147) is third and Asheville (180) is 2nd.  Both of their football teams reached the semi-finals of the state playoffs and Asheville’s finishes in boy’s and girl’s cross country.  Charlotte Catholic, behind their state 3-A football championship, is in first with 227.5 points.

Watauga (92.5) behind their football and volleyball teams came in 12th.
