–Smoky Mt is top 2-A team in NCPreps.com boys basketball rankings

3 January 2008

January 2, 2008 - It didn’t take Jimmy Cleaveland long to get Smoky Mountain into the state rankings.  In just his second year at the Jackson County school, he has taken the the 11-0 Mustangs to the top spot in the first state polls of the year from NCPreps.com, dispite having two starters, Dillon Dunsford and C J Fortner, out with injuries.  Cleaveland led the Pisgah Bears to the 2005 2-A state title.

After the 2005-2006 season, he resigned as basketball coach and took an administrative position as an assistant principal at Pisgah.  Then Smoky Mt., who had an opening, came calling.

The Jackson County school system allows assistant principals to also coach sports, something that Cleaveland still had an urge to do.  He took the Smoky Mt opening and was put in charge of elevating the level of play of the Mustangs program.

In the 1-A, Hendersonville and Polk Co were 6th and 7th respectively, with Hayesville reaching as an Honorable Mention.

Along with Smoky Mt in the 2-A, Pisgah was Honorable Mention.

In the 3-A, no teams were ranked, but both Roberson and North Buncombe were Honorable Mention.

In the 4-A, McDowell was the lone representative at #2.
