–2009 conference realignments shake things up WNC

1 December 2007

RALEIGH - Realignment in 2009 will really shake things up in Western North Carolina if everything stays the same as the NCHSAA has proposed.  A lot of mountain teams will be moving to split conferences, five teams will be changing classifications

The biggest change in Buncombe County will be at Reynolds and Roberson.

Roberson is moving to 4-A from 3-A, as it has become the largest high school in the mountains, with 1495 students.  The Rams, the Rockets, along with McDowell, will become a part of a 3-A/4-A conference with all the 3-A Buncombe County schools (Asheville, Enka, Erwin, North Buncombe).

In Henderson County, the biggest change is that both East Henderson and West Henderson will be moving to 3-A to compete in another split conference.  Franklin and Tuscola are the other 3-A schools that will move into the same conference.  Owen will also move from the split WHC, to join Brevard, Pisgah and Smoky Mt in the 2-A.

In the current split 1-A/2-A WHC, Polk will move up to 2-A, Mitchell will drop down to 1-A, North Henderson will leave the WAC and join the conference as will Thomas Jefferson, a prep school from Rutherford County.  Avery, Hendersonville, Madison, and Mt Heritage will remain in the conference.

Schools that want to file an appeal can do so before the conferences are finalized on March 8th.
