–Mitchell wins North Knight Invitational on Saturday

HENDERSONVILLE - November 23, 2007 - In one of the early tournaments of the year, Mitchell County’s wrestling team narrowly won the North Knight Invitational held at North Henderson.  The 2-A Mountaineers had 155 points and 4-A East Gaston, wound up in second with 148.5 points.  In fact the top five teams were within 22 points of each other.

Host 2-A North Henderson was a close third with 146 points and Knights’ wrestler, 140# Sterling Ducker, was named the tournaments Most Outstanding Wrestler. 

Mitchell had nine wrestlers to place in the top four during the tournament.  The three winners were 119# Timmy Sullivan in a decision over Roberson’s Mikey McFalls, 130# Malachi Honeycutt with a pin over Science Hill’s Justin Snyder and 215# Justin Pfouts with a pin over 1-A Rosman’s Luke Hinson. 

Three Mountaineer wrestlers were second including 125# Jaron Edwards, 171# Joe Bomar and 189# Josh Peterson.  Third place was 145# Caleb Mitchler and in fourth were 103# Seth Hollifield and 135# Ethan Peterson.

Two North wrestlers won their individual weight divisions.  Along with Ducker, 135# Andrew Campbell won a decision over East Gaston’s Corey Jones.

The 3-A Roberson Rams were sixth with 65 points, dispite the fact that they only filled 8 out of their 14 weight classes.  Dispite the obstacles, they still managed to get three wrestlers into the finals.  125# Cody Sprowles decisioned Mitchell’s Edwards to win and both 119# McFalls and 152# Dakota Dockins came in second.

2-A East Henderson was seventh with 62 points.  145# Nick Hehner finished in second.  140# Jared Hehner along with 152# Colton Worley came in third.  Both 112# Jayson Summey and 215# Tyler Thomas came in fourth place.

1-A Rosman was eighth with 58.5 points.  145# Zach Whitman won his weight division with a decision over East’s Nick Hehner.  215# Luke Hinson was second.  125# Zach Hutchinson came in fourth.

Although their football playoff hopes ended last week, 2-A Brevard’s Coach Bryson is playing it smart and letting his football players have some time off.  Last years runner-up Martin Avery should be back next week along with 2 time state placer Casey Essenburg to help solidify the Blue Devil line-up.  Brevard was ninth with 57.5 points.  The Blue Devils had two wrestlers in the top four of their weight classification.  112# Eric Evanger pinned East Gaston’s Billy Phoutinan to win and 171# Craig King came in fourth.
