–Lane’s six TD’s leads rout in Red Raiders win over NW Cabarrus

BELMONT - November 16, 2007 - The South Point Red Raiders of the Big South 3A/4A Conference ran over, under, around and through the Northwest Cabarrus Trojans of the Northern Piedmont 3A Conference to advance to the third round of the state 3AA playoffs, winning 70-31.

Chris Lane put on an MVP performance by scoring on runs of 53, 61, 24 and 21 yards.  Lane also added to his six touchdown performance by catching two of QB Desmond Lowery’s three passes on scoring plays of 18 and 43 yards.  In all, the Red Raiders scored 10 touchdowns and 10 extra points

The visiting Trojans game plan of pass, pass, pass became obvious following the opening kickoff.  In the first half QB Jeremy Cannon stood alone in the backfield and took every snap from the shotgun formation.  The only runs that Northwest attempted in the half, that lasted 1-1/2 hours, were on quarterback keepers and quarterback scrambles as Logan completed 19 of 37 passes.

For a while it looked like a good game plan as the Trojans took an early 3-0 lead on their first possession when kicker Logan Cannon connected on a 40 yard field goal.  The Trojans would enjoy that lead for only fifteen seconds as Brandon Spencer returned the ensuing kickoff 70 yards to give the Raiders a 7-3 lead after James Justice added his first of ten extra points.

Northwest quickly answered the Raiders score on their next possession thanks to a 79 yard pass play to Josh Cannon down to the Raiders one.  Jeremy Cannon ran it in two plays later to push the Trojans back into a 10-7 lead.

Chris Lane’s first touchdown came on a 53 yard run with just over a minute left in the quarter to give the Raiders a 14-10 lead that they would never relenquish.

South Point pushed the lead to 28-17  with just under five minutes left in the half.

With just under three minutes left in the first half, the Trojans had pushed the ball to the Raiders five and it seemed apparent that they were ready to tighten the score when the game took a sudden downward turn for the visitors.

Raider defender Jesse McGaha picked a Cannon pass at the goal line and returned it 55 yards to the Raiders 45.

It took the Raiders less than a minute to pad their lead to 35-17 thanks to a 43 yard pass from Lowery to Lane.  Things got even worse on the following kickoff when the Raiders recovered a Josh Cannon fumble at the Trojans 16.  On first down, Lane got the call again and sprinted in from 16 yards out to give the Raiders a commanding 42-17 half-time lead.

The Raiders added three unanswered scores in the third quarter with a one yard run by Aaron Crumbley, a 40 yard interception return by Michael Lewis and a 21 yard run by Lane to push the lead to 63-17.

The Trojans added two scores in the final quarter and the South Point reserves squeezed in another score between the Trojans touchdowns to produce the 70-31 final score.

The Raiders racked up 479 rushing yards on 35 attempts.  The run oriented Raiders totaled 61 passing yards with Lowery completing 2 of 3 with both completions gathered in by Chris Lane and both for going for touchdowns.

The Trojans managed only 111 rushing yards on 27 carries.  Jeremy Cannon completed 30 of 55 pass attempts with two interceptions as the Trojans rolled up 454 yards with their prolific passing game but it did not help them where it matters the most, on the scoreboard.

South Point will be at home next week against T.C. Roberson.
