–Langston Wood is in good company, now 5th in WNC’s career rushing yardage

13 November 2007

CHEROKEE - November 13, 2007 - When you think the name Langston Wood, you would most likely think about the guy for the Cherokee Braves who has been a tailback his whole career, spanning a few games in his freshman year through his senior year.  You would be right, but earlier this year, Scooter McCoy, head football coach of the Braves, put him at quarterback around the sixth game of the season.

Through it all, he has remained the ultimate team player and continues to rack up yardage.  Going into last weeks 1st round game with Andrews, he was seventh in WNC history.

After the game, he was #5 overall, with 5,339 total yards, passing #6 Willie Harper, who finished his career with 5,243 at Reynolds and currently plays at Western Carolina and #5 Brett Chappell, who ran for 5,296 yards at Rosman and is now the head coach of East Henderson.

He also became the Smoky Mountain Conference top rusher, again passing Brett Chappell.

Wood now has 1,707 yards on 162 carries (10.54 yards per carry) for the season and is currently only 224 yards behind #4 Jeremy Laster of North Buncombe who has 5,563 yards.

As a team, the Braves have rushed 465 times for 4,047 yards (8.7 yards per carry).  Carr Crowe, who started the year at quarterback, has 1,059 yards on 107 carries (9.9 yards per carry).

On Friday, #2 Cherokee (8-3) hosts  #10 South Stanly (5-7) at Ray Kinsland Stadium at 7:30.
