BELMONT - November 2, 2007 - The South Point Red Raiders (9-0, 5-0) went into tonight’s contest against the visiting Crest Chargers needing a win to clinch the conference title. Crest (7-3, 3-2) also needed a win, coupled with an Ashbrook loss to secure the best record among the 4A teams in the Big South 3A/4A split conference. The home standing Raiders accomplished their goal but the contest was not decided until the closing seconds of this final regular season conference contest.
With the game tied at 14, South Point ended the third quarter on a 45-yard run by Stan Wilson to the Crest five yard line. On the second play of the fourth quarter, Wilson’s one yard run gave the Raiders a 21-14 lead but there was still over eleven minutes left in the contest, plenty of time for the Chargers to tie the game or take the lead on a two point conversion.
Crest pushed the ball inside the Raiders 20 on their next drive and they turned the ball over on downs inside the 15. The Raiders went three and out and the Chargers took possession at their 45 following the punt with just under four minutes to play.
Once again Crest pushed the ball inside the twenty and once again the Red Raider defense rose to the occassion as defender Mike Lewis broke up both a third and fourth down pass at the goal line with only six ticks left on the clock to give the Raiders a hard-fought 21-14 victory.
The Raiders never trailed in the game thanks to QB Devon Lowery’s five yard run for the first South Point score just over eight minutes into the game. The Charges answered on their next possession with a touchdown on Tosh Toms 16 yard carry capping an 80-yard drive. Toms was elusive all night long to the Raider defenders while gaining 121 yards on 22 carries.
Neither team was able to score again before the first half ended in a 7-7 tie.
It was Senior Band Night and the South Point senior bandmembers were recognized during the half-time break.
In the third quarter, the Raiders would need only three plays to push the lead to 14-7 when Chris Lane broke free on a 59-yard sprint into the end-zone capping a 67-yard drive.
The Chargers answered the Raiders score on their next possession with Ryan Black scoring on a three yard run at the end of a 68-yard drive.
South Point kicker James Justice and Crest kicker Trever Austin were both 3 for 3 on extra point attempts.
Next week the Raiders should be at home for the first round of the state playoffs while the Charges await the playoff brackets.
