–Cougars closer to MAC title after beating Franklin
23 October 2007By Michael Painter
ASHEVILLE - October 22, 2007 - With the much needed rain falling down on Senior Night, sophomore Kenneth Lingerfelt had two goals to lead the Asheville boys soccer team to a 4-0 win over Franklin. The Cougars were in control from the beginning of the match, scoring two goals in each half. Even though a sophomore led them in scoring, the seniors did their part, having a hand, or a foot, in every score or save during the match.
Senoir goalie, Reed Turchi had 3 saves on five Franklin shots, with the last save securing his 9th shutout. It was a hard shot from about 15 yards out that Turchi dove for and got a hand on with close to three minutes left in the game.
Asheville (14-5-3/9-1-1) had a big night from a shot perspective. The Cougars stayed on the Panthers’ side of the fifty for most of the game and collected an insane number of 33 shots on goal.
Franklin (3-14-1/1-9-0) goalie, Hobie Collins had 13 saves, many of them from within 10-15 yards. There were several times that the Cougars had a 2-on-1 or a 1-on-1 breakaway, and Collins was able to deflect or stop a lot of shots that came his way.
Lingerfelt got the Cougars on the board early with a goal in the 7th minute off of a pass from senior, Happy Stewart. Lingerfelt scored his second goal in the 30th minute, this time with an assist from senior, Ben Sherwood, giving Asheville a 2-0 halftime advantage.
To go along with his assist, Stewart also got a goal, coming just five minutes into the second half off of a feed from senior, Nic Dodson and five minutes later, Dodson got his own goal, taking a pass from senior, Dashiel Huebner.
With a win on Wednesday at North Buncombe, the Cougars will win the MAC title and will likely have a #1 seed in the state tournament that starts on Saturday.
