WAYNESVILLE - October 12, 2007 - North Buncombe junior quarterback Randy Pressley frantically searched for an open teammate in the final seconds of the second quarter. He ran across the field to the left, then scrambled back to the right. No one was open. So, he took off and scored on a magnificent 62-yard touchdown run with no time on the clock.
That was what Pressley did for four quarters, putting on what could easily be coined the most memorable individual performance in Weatherby Stadium as he led North Buncombe over Tuscola to a Mountain Athletic Conference victory, 39-35.
For the third time this year he either scored running or threw the winning touchdown pass in the last minute. He had previously beaten Enka on September 21st when he scored on a quarterback sneak with 38 seconds left and on October 5th, he scooped up a
Pressley passed for 174 yards and two touchdown (65, 50), including the game-winner with 1:20 left in the game, rushed for 254 yards and two TDs (70, 62) and finished with an incredible 423 total offensive yards.
"When you’re playing a kid like that, what more can you do?" said Tuscola Head Coach Donnie Kiefer. "Our kids played hard, I don’t know how much better they could have played. He was just hard to tackle. We worked as hard as we could all week to do things that would help us contain him, but a player like that is going to make his plays."
Pressley wasn’t the only star on the field as Tuscola sophomore quarterback Tyler Brosius had a career-best game, completing 20-of-35 passes for 286 yards and three touchdowns.
The MAC encounter began on a positive note for Tuscola, jumping out to a 7-0 lead after Brosius connected with Sage Frady on a 37-yard scoring strike and Leo Gamez added the PAT.
North Buncombe answered immediately and tied the game at seven when Pressley broke containment and ran for a 70-yard TD and Zack Dillow added the extra point.
North Buncombe regained the lead, 9-7, two minutes later on a safety, when Brosius was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone.
The Black Hawks began another march for another score after the safety but were denied when sophomore linebacker Austin Chambers intercepted Pressley at the Tuscola 30 in the final seconds of the first quarter.
Tuscola turned the pick into a 14-9 lead when Brosius zipped a five-yard touchdown pass to Shane Heatherly with 10:06 remaining before halftime.
Seven minutes later, North Buncombe answered in the see-saw affair when Christian West scored on a 45-yard run, giving the Black Hawks a 16 -14 lead.
Tuscola made North Buncombe pay for a failed onside kick when Josh Adams scooted across the goal line from the two yard line, giving Tuscola a 21-16 lead with 3:37 remaining before halftime.
However, the lead didn’t stay in favor of Tuscola long as Pressley fired a 65-yard touchdown pass to Maverick Reed with 1:46 remaining in the second quarter. But the Black Hawks two-point conversion attempt failed, holding their lead to a point, 22-21.
However, the scoring wasn’t over, especially with Pressley or Brosius still playing for keeps. Tuscola responded by going 80-yards in less than a minute as a 59-yard TD pass from Brosius to Adams gave back the lead to the Mountaineers, 28-22, with only 12 seconds left before halftime. Gamez again provided the PAT for the Mountaineers.
That’s when Pressley provided the highlight of the game, finishing off a 41-point, second quarter explosion, scoring on the final play of the first half, giving the Black Hawks a 29-28 lead.
Both teams apparently figured out during halftime how to defend each other as North Buncombe managed the only points of the third quarter, a 38-yard field goal by Dillow to extend the Black Hawks’ lead to 32- 28.
Tuscola recaptured the lead for the final time with 7:27 remaining in the fourth quarter when Brosius hooked up with senior tight end Andrew Taylor for a 7-yard TD pass-and-catch. The Mountaineers led, 35-32.
However, it was Pressley who owned the night, as the junior completed the game-winning, 50-yard TD pass to Justin Norton with 1:20 left in the game, winning 39-35
