–Warhorses dominate short-handed Madison
13 October 2007By Derek Norton
BLACK MOUNTAIN-October 12, 2007-With only ten players on their sideline and a shaky history against the Owen Warhorses that includes being outscored 177-6 over the past four years, the odds were certainly against the struggling Madison Patriots going into Black Mountain and coming out with a win. Despite a valiant effort, the Patriots fell 36-0 on Owen’s homecoming and were shut out for the third straight year by the Warhorses.
"They could’ve come over here and just went through the motions, but they didn’t," said Owen coach Kenny Ford. "They came up here and went toe-to-toe with us."
The Warhorses opened the game firing all cylinders, capping a 6 play, 63 yard scoring drive with a 28 yard run by senior fullback Thomas Barker to give Owen an 8-0 lead after a successful two-point conversion.
Madison followed with a three-and-out, but the punt landed inside the Warhorse 1. Owen gained six yards before punting, and while the Patriots were able to pick up a first down on the first play of the ensuing drive, back-to-back tackles for loss by Barker and Adam Greenspan forced the Patriots to punt again.
The Warhorses started at their own 20, and 17 yard run by Barker on 3rd & 2 from the 28 and a 43 yard TD run by Wilson five plays later put Owen up by 15 in the first quarter.
Following a Madison three-and-out and two possessions that ended in turnovers, the Warhorses began another scoring drive at the Patriot 49. After picking up one first down, the Warhorses faced a 4th and 14 from the Madison 42. Despite a fierce pass-rush by the Patriots, Owen QB Aaron Reese scrambled outside the pocket and found the outstretched arms of Jerome Wilkins for a 20 yard gain and a first down. Two plays later, Wilson scored his second touchdown from 13 yards out to give the Warhorses a 23-0 lead they would take into halftime.
In the third quarter, Owen continued to control the clock with a 12 play, 64 yard drive that lasted 5:25 and ended with a one yard run by Tyler Martin that put the Warhorses up 29-0.
Owen’s final score, set up by a 41 yard run by Martin early in the 4th quarter, came on a 10 yard by Aaron Reese on 4th & 1. The drive lasted nine plays while spanning 87 yards. Following the touchdown, Dion Wilson’s interception on the first play of the Madison drive allowed Owen to run down the final 3:05 of the game and take the 36-0 win.
With the Owen win and Mitchell’s 45-42 win over Hendersonville, there are now four WHC teams-Owen, Polk, Mitchell and Hendersonville-with only one conference loss.
"The conference is up for grabs, but we think we have a pretty good shot," said Barker, whose Warhorses are shooting for a sixth straight WHC championship. "These next few weeks should be very interesting."
The Warhorses (6-2, 3-1) will travel to Hendersonville (6-3, 3-1) next week for another WHC showdown while Madison (0-8, 0-3) will host Avery (2-6, 1-2).
