GASTONIA - October 12, 2007 - The South Point Red Raiders visited Joe Alala Stadium, home of the Forestview Jaguars on Homecoming night looking to stay undefeated and at least remain in a tie for the lead in the Big South 3A/4A Conference race. The Red Raiders did stay undefeated , beating Forestview, 35-16.
The game had an ominous start for the Red Raiders when Jarkeevus Alexander returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a quick touchdown and a 6-0 lead for the homestanding Jags.
The Red Raiders used just over two minutes on their first drive to tie the score on a 9 yard run by QB Desmond Lowery. South Point then took a 7-6 lead when James Justice kicked his first of four extra points for the contest.
Forestview, looking for their first win against South Point in the short history of their school, took their last lead on their next possession when Pretson Lyon was on target with a 30-yard field goal.
On South Point’s next possession FB Aaron Crumbley scored his first of three touchdowns for the game on a 16 yard jaunt. With just over three minutes left in the first quarter, South Point had regained the lead at 14-9 and never looked back.
Crumbley added another TD in the second and third quarters on a runs of 2 yards and 4 yards respectively. The Raiders victory came primarily on the legs of Crumbley who gained 154 yards on twenty-five carries. Most of his attempts came in the second half when South Point went to a ball-control game after jumping out to a 28-9 half-time lead. In the second half the Raiders controlled the ball twice as long as Forestview and it is usually hard to make a comeback if your offense can not get the ball.
South Point scored their other touchdown just before the first half ended on a 19 yard pass from QB Lowery to WR Brandon Spencer. Forestview added their final score just ten seconds before the game ended on a 6 yard run by Kevin Jeter yielding the 35-16 final score.
During the half-time Jasmine Bell was crowned the Homecoming Queen for Forestview.
The Raiders face a touch opponent next week at home against Charlotte Latin in a non-conference game while Forestview will travel to Ashbrook.
