ARDEN- In Cross-Country, the top five runners are compiled to get your teams’ score. East Henderson and North Buncombe both had the same amount of runners (8 apiece between both races) finish in the top 15, but it was where the other runners on both teams finished that determined who would take 1st place at the Christ School Invite.
The North Buncombe boys had all five of their runners finish in top 25 to edge out East Henderson by six points to win the meet, 52-58 while the North Buncombe girls had all five of their runners finish in the top 15 to squeak by East Henderson, 47-49.
For the boys race, Christ School’s Rhett English gave the home crowd something to cheer about as he crossed the finish line first. Nic Carswell and Matt Pomfrey from North Buncombe came in second and third to lead the way for the Blackhawks. Will Jordan from Carolina Day came in fourth as he helped the Wildcats to a third place team finish overall and East Henderon’s Jet Rogers came in fifth to contribute to the Eagles’ runner-up finish.
Sixth and 7th place were separated by less than a second as Smoky Mountains’ Adam Ray edged out Carolina Day’s Benjamin Birdsong. David McKenzie became the third North Buncombe runner to finish the race, coming in 8th while Ty Townsend became the second East Henderson runner to finish, finishing 9th. Will Graham from Carolina Day rounded out the top ten.
With North Buncombe placing three runners in the top fifteen and East Henderson placing four, it was the last runners’ placings that determined on who would win. North Buncombes’ last two runners, Eli Spear and Kyle Ward finished 17th and 22nd while East Henderson’s fifth runner, Nick Henner finished 21st.
Carolina Day came in 3rd at the meet while host Christ School came in 4th, edging 5th place Smoky Mountain by 14 points. Over 30 points separated 6th place Erwin and 7th place Pisgah.
Despite a third place finish from East Henderson’s Devin Gayner, the North Buncombe girls’ team had all five of their runners finish in the top 15 as they earned a two-point win over the 2nd place Lady Eagles.
Tuscola’s Megan McCleod won the race while second place went to Madison’s Tori Jones, but neither team brought enough runners to factor into the team results. Smoky Mountains’ Cadence Railsback inched out a 4th place finish over 5th place Hydie Waldbart from East Henderson.
North Buncombe would claim four of the next five spots courtesy of 6th and 7th places from Rachel Winterling and Miranda Schmidt. Christa Stausbary was the only Pisgah runner to finish in the top 15 with an 8th place finish. The Vogel sisters, Kaela and Jessa finished 9th and 10th respectively.
While North Buncombe’s 6th runner, Ashley Miller finished 16th, it was that one place that determined the difference between first and second place, as East Henderson’s fifth runner, Brooke Neelands finished 17th.
Third and 4th place were separated by just three points as Pisgah’s 101 points were enough to squeak by Smoky Mountain, who had 104.
