–Asheville defeats Mt Tabor in field hockey
10 October 2007ASHEVILLE - October 9, 2007 - Western North Carolina, like many other areas of the South, has been thristy for rain for a long time. On Tuesday, Asheville got drenched with a downpour between 3:30 to 4:15, delaying the start by 30 minutes. It didn’t dampen the spirits of the Lady Cougars though, as they scored two late goals to beat conference rival, Mt Tabor, 2-1 in field hockey.
It was a battle for first place in the conference as Mt Tabor was undefeated and Asheville had one loss, coming last week in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of R J Reynolds.
There was a slight drizzle that fell during much of the game.
In the first half, Asheville spent over 20 minutes in the offensive mode, playing on the Spartans’ side of the midfield stripe. Trying with all they had, they just couldn’t get it past goalie, Mary Cameron Hamilton. In fact, neither team could get it into the goal and the result was a scoreless tie at the half.
Hamilton had 12 saves against 19 shots tossed at her by Asheville.
As in the first half, Asheville spent most of the time as the aggressor, but Mt Tabor was the first to get on the board when Julia Heelan, a junior, blasted one past Asheville goalie, Ryan Nuckolls six minutes into the half, giving them a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans only took five shots at Nuckolls and she saved three of them.
With a little more than nine minutes left in the game, the Lady Cougars finally got on the board when junior Mallory Silver took a pass from Catherine Looper and slapped into the net to tie the match at 1-1.
Silver was part of the next score also as she got the ball to Kelly Olesiuk, who scored the winning goal with five minutes left in the game, making it 2-1.
Asheville is now 8-1 in conference and 16-2 overall. They play on Wednesday at Freedom.
