–Asheville field hockey gets 12th shutout

30 September 2007

ASHEVILLE - September 29, 2007 - What else can be said about a team that keeps winning their games without allowing the other team to score on them.  How about awesome?  How about wow?  The Asheville Lady Cougars are that team and their latest victim was East Chapel Hill, whom they beat, 1-0 in overtime.

Asheville now has beaten both the 2006 state champion, RJ Reynolds, 3-0, on August 30 and the runner-up, the Wildcats of East Chapel Hill.  The Wildcats also won four straight state championships between 2001-2004.

By far, it was one of their toughest matches of the year (the other one was the opening day loss to 2005 State champion, Chapel Hill, 4-1) as the two teams played two 30 minutes halves without a score.

It wasn’t until there was two minutes left in the overtime that Mallory Silver, a junior, took a pass from Rachel Nash and put it in the goal, thus winning the game, 1-0.

Both defenses played great.  They stopped numerous scoring opportunities before their opponents could get close to the goal.
The Lady Cougars finished with 14 shots on goal and the Wildcats had nine shots on goal.

Asheville’s Ryan Nuckolls had nine saves as all of the shots from East Chapel Hill were on goal.

It doesn’t get any easier as Asheville plays again on Wednesday, Oct 3 at home as they host the Demons of RJ Reynolds for the second time of the season.  The Demons will be looking for revenge in the 4:00 game.

On Thursday, the Lady Cougars travel to Christ Church, with a 4:00 start.
