–Raiders 2-0 in conference play with victory over Hunter Huss

GASTONIA - September 28, 2007 - The South Point Red Raiders of Belmont visited the Hunter Huss Huskies of Gastonia on Friday night looking to improve on their 5-0 start. With nearly 500 yards in total offense, the Red Raiders improved their record to 6-0 as they dominated the Huskies in taking a 51-20 win back to Belmont.
The Huskies took the opening kickoff and started their first possession at their 29 after South Point won the opening toss and deferred to the second half.
The Huskies first offensive play set the tone for the evening when Quintin Coleman’s halfback pass to Jawan Williams was intercepted by the Raiders secondary. The Raiders took possession at their 28 and would need only five rushing plays to get into the end-zone with FB Aaron Crumbley covering the last 11 yards. The PAT failed but the Raiders held a 6-0 lead.
The Huskies offense went three and out following the kickoff and the Raiders had the ball again at their 42 following a Hunter Huss punt. On first down Chris Lane broke free down the left side for a 58 yard touchdown sprint. James Justice added his first of six extra points and the Raiders had jumped out to a 13-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.
The Huskies temporarily reeled in the Raider’s when they manufactured a 77-yard drive on their next possession with Damarrius Dixon running it in from 32 yards out. Huss also missed the PAT on what would be their only score in the first half.
The Raiders dominated the remainder of the first half with FB Crumbley scoring on runs of 13 yards and one yard. Kicker James Justice added a 34 yard field goal and QB Desmond Lowery hooked up with Chris Lane on a 28 yard touchdown toss. The Raiders offense rolled up over 380 yards in the first half compared to the Huskies 125 yards and the Raiders took a 37-6 lead into the locker room.
Following the intermission, Red Raider Stan Wilson returned the opening kickoff 45 yards to the Huskies 46. Two plays later, after gaining 22 and 24 yards Lowery pushed the South Point lead to 44-6 less than one minute into the third quarter. Hunter Huss followed with a touchdown of their own when Dixon scored on a one yard run making the score 44-13. Unfortunately, for Hunter Huss, their touchdown drive took nearly eight minutes off the clock and consumed most of the quarter.
Both teams added another score in the fourth quarter with South Point scoring on a one yard run by reserve RB Nathan Hall. The Huskies posted their last points when Darius Antrum scored on a 22 yard run. Austin Lutz added his second of two PAT’s to round out the final score of 51-13.
The Raiders ground game amassed 442 rushing yards, with QB Lowery gaining 117 yards on 8 carries, RB Chris Lane 96 yards on 5 carries and Nathan Hall notched 38 yards with 7 totes. The workhorse for the night was Aaron Crumbley with 163 yards oin 16 carries.
The Huskies garnered 236 total rushing yards with Damarruis Dixon gaining 77 yards on 13 carries, Daruis Antrum 72 yards on 8 carries and QB Marshall Williams covering 60 yards on 13 carries.
Lowery accounted for 50 yards for the Red Raiders as he went 3-7 in the passing department. Huskie QB Marshall Williams was 3-7 with 44 yards however, the Huskies suffered 3 interceptions, two by Williams and one by Coleman.
Next week the Huskies will travel to East Gaston where one of those two teams will win their first conference game and South Point will be at home against Ashbrook that lost a triple overtime game to conference favorite North Gaston on Friday night.
