–Asheville field hockey keeps on a truckin’ with shutouts

29 September 2007

CHARLOTTE - September 27, 2007 - The Asheville Lady Cougars field hockey team is in rare air this fall and it’s not the altitude that is causing all the talk.  These girls have played 14 games, putting up a gaudy 13-1 record, and the only loss came on opening day to Chapel Hill, 4-1.  Since then, they have had 11 shutouts, including Thursday’s game in which they beat Myers Park in Charlotte, 6-0.

Caity Heath led the scoring for the Lady Cougars with three goals and one assist.  Catherine Looper scored two and also had an assist.

Looper scored five minutes into the game off an assist by Elizabeth Gaston and three minutes later, Mallory Silver put an unassisted goal past the keeper, getting Asheville an early 2-0 lead.  Heath got her first goal with six minutes left in the first half, using a pass from Gaston, with her second assist on the day.

It took just over 12 minutes for Looper to get her second goal of the day when Heath sent a pass to her in front of the goal to put the Cougars ahead, 4-0.

Heath scored two goals in the last seven minutes of the match, the first off a feed from Looper and the second was unassisted.

Ryan Nuckolls had only 1 save on one shot on goal, thanks to Asheville’s defense.  The Cougars finished with 25 shots on goal.

They play East Chapel Hill on Saturday at 2:30 at Asheville.
