–Roberson girls do it again, winning the ATC Fall Classic

ASHEVILLE - September 17, 2007 - The Roberson ‘Runnin Rams" have done it again. For the second year in a row, they have won the Asheville Track Club Fall Classic at Carrier Park (the old Asheville Speedway). Led by Caroline Kirby, who came in first with a time of 19:14, they trounced their competition, with five of the top eight girls coming from the Rams. They tallied 22 points, easily beating the runner-up Reynolds,with 108 points.
Kirby and runner-up Sarah Willingham (19:20) from North Henderson ran neck and neck for most
of the 5K (3.1M) race and within the last 1/4 mile, Kirby began to pull away.
Kirby’s teammate, Stephanie Chapman (19:55)came in third, Tuscola’s Megan McLeod (20:00) was fourth and Madison’s Tori Jones (20:05) was fifth. Three runners from Roberson were sixth through eighth place. They were Kylie Smith (20:08), Laura Hoer (20:10) and Zoe Dubin (20:33). Ninth place was Kristen Stout (20:40) from Herdersonville and the Ram’s Marie Mauhar (21:01) was tenth.
"I pulled away from her at toward the end of the race," said Kirby. "It was quite a battle, with both of us giving it all we had. We were both trying our best to win and I was fortunate to be able to get her this time."
Willingham, a junior, is usually better on courses that have different elevations.
"Caroline is better on a flat course," said Willingham. "It seemed that she reserved some for the end, because when she took off, I couldn’t keep up with her."
Hendersonville (127) took third in the girls competition, while East Henderson (137) was fourth and North Henderson (145) came in fifth.
