–Polk’s Joshua Trejo spoils Owen’s upset bid with late goal

28 September 2007

SWANNANOA - September 26, 2007 - The Polk County Wolverines are leading the pack in the Western Highlands Conference and the Owen Warhorses were bent on putting a one in the loss column for Polk.  After an early goal by Owen, the Wolverines held them scoreless and scored two in the second half to stay undefeated in the conference, 2-1.

It looked like Owen was going to be able to take the Wolverines early on as Oscar Orellano scored in the 6th minute of the game.  He got a pass about 40 yards out from Hayden Jarzyna and outran a defender on a breakaway goal, giving the Warhorses a quick 1-0 lead.

Four minutes later, he also scored, but the referre called an Owen player for offsides, negating the goal.  If it would have counted, who knows what would have happened.

It stayed 1-0 through to the halftime as both team’s defenses as well as the goalkeepers, Rasmus Thiesen from Owen and Hugo Santos from Polk kept the ball out of the nets.

One of the players that stood out was Polk’s sweeper, Brett Tyner, who repeatedly got to balls to keep them from getting to Santos.

"We really work on our defense a lot," said Tyner, a junior.  "Coach Charles is a good teacher.  We work on a lot of different things and it pays off."

In the last 10 minutes of the first half, it looked like the momentum went from the Warhorses to Polk.  They were attacking more and passing with more precision than Owen was.  They were clearly the aggressor.

Coming out of the half, Polk’s head coach Lennox Charles, added another forward into the mix and it brought great results.

"In the second half, we did what I think was the thing that changed the game for us," said Charles.  "We added a third forward, putting more pressure on their defense.  (Russell) McIntyre and (Heath) Culbreth were cutting everything off and it kept their offense off balance."

The extra forward worked out great for Polk and the biggest area was in the play of striker, Joshua Trejo.  He scored both second half goals, with one coming off of a throw-in and the other off of a penalty kick.

"At half time, coach told us to go out and play simple," said Trejo.  "by playing our game, not theirs.  We did that the second half and it payed off.  We were doing the things that we needed to do.  This is getting normal for us.  We get down and we come back."

Trejo took an assist from both Tony Sciuva who threw the ball in and Culbreth headed it to Trejo for the tying goal in the 55th minute.  In the 77th minute, Trejo took a rebound off of a corner kick and popped it by Thiesen for the winning shot to give the Wolverines the 2-1 victory.

"This is at least the fourth time that Joshua has scored the winning goal for us,"

"There were a couple of tough calls during the game," said Owen’s Jeremy Foreman, who has taken over for head coach Christine Stewart, who is pregnant and has taken time away from coaching while still teaching.  "but that’s the way it goes.  They played with a lot of heart tonight.  Both goals were off of set pieces.  If we had stopped those, it could have been a different story."

The game was pretty even as far as the statistics were concerned.  Polk had 11 shots on goal and Owen had nine.  Reisen had nine saves and Santos had 8.
