ASHEVILLE - September 25, 2007 - The Asheville High School field hockey team, the only public high school east of Morganton that plays the game, is on top of it’s game. On Tuesday, they ran their record to 12-1, beating West Forsyth, 3-0, at Asheville Memorial Stadium.
This gives Asheville 10 shutouts for the season
Catherine Looper lead the way for the Lady Cougars with a goal and an assist.
"We try to keep the ball on their half of the field as much as possible," said Looper on their success. "We push each other and play as a team."
Team is the right term as 10 players have scored so far this year.
"We’re a passing team," added Looper, a sophomore. "and we want to get everybody involved. It doesn’t matter who scores as long as we finish the point."
Elizabeth Keil scored the first goal six minutes into the game off of a feed by Looper and then Looper got her goal in the fifth minute of the second half. Leah Downey got the assist own Looper’s goal.
Elizabeth Gaston scored the final unassisted goal, with 5:34 left in the match to give Asheville it’s final margin.
"My expectations for the team are so high right now," said Asheville’s head coach Lauren Kaye. "that anything short of perfect is almost unexceptable. We have had 12 shutouts in 14 games so far. Our defense is playing great right now, only giving up 25 shots on goal the whole season (1.8/game) and our goalie (Ryan Nuckolls) only has seven legitimate saves all year (.5/game)."
The Lady Cougars play again Thursday at Myers Park in Charlotte at 4:15 and then entertains East Chapel Hill on Saturday at 2:30.
On Monday, September 24, the Lady Cougars defeated Spartanburg Day, 5-0. Keil scored two goals and Gaston, Looper and Downey scored the other three. Assists were made by Looper, Caity Heath and Kelly Olesiuk. Nuckolls had 2 saves on Spartanburg’s two shots on goal. Asheville finished with 17 shots on goal.
