–Red Raiders overpower East Gaston in conference opener

22 September 2007

By Anthony Perkins

BELMONT - September 21, 2007 - In front of a standing room only crowd, the South Point Red Raiders hosted the East Gaston Warriors on Friday night for the conference opener for both teams and prevailed with a 31-0 score.  The Raider’s defense was the big story on this night as they held the rival Warriors to only 153 net yards, 82 yards on the ground and 71 yards passing with running back Charles Johnson gained 76 of their 82 rushing yards.

The Warriors were never able to advance the ball inside the South Point thirty five and pose a real scoring threat due to a very stingy South Point defense.

On the other side of the ball, the Raider’s offense rolled up 378 yards on the ground and 155 yards through the air for a total of 533 net yards.  QB Desmond Lowery was the big dog for South Point runners as he gained 147 yards on 16 carries including a 57-yarder for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Fullback Aaron Crumbley added 46 yards on 12 carries including a one-yard plunge for a touchdown about midway through the second quarter.

The Red Raiders rounded out their offensive arsenal by unleashing a seldom-used passing attack.  The first score of the game came in the first quarter on a 60-yard halfback pass from Josh Justice to a wide-open Brandon Spencer down the right side of the field.

Although the statistics and the final score seem a little lopsided the Raiders only held a 14-0 lead going into the half.

In the second half, the Raiders fumbled the ball inside the East Gaston five and missed two short field goal attempts after getting inside the East Gaston ten.

Kicker James Justice was perfect on four extra point attempts and he also added a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.  The Raider improved to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play while the Warriors fell to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Next week the Raiders will travel to Gastonia to face the Hunter Huss Huskies while East Gaston will travel to Kings Mountain and play the Mountaineers in a non-conference match-up.
