CANDLER - September 18, 2007 - The Enka Sugar Jets defeated Tuscola in volleyball on Tuesday night, 3-0 in a tune-up for Thursday’s show-down against Franklin at Enka. Enka is undefeated at 9-0 and Franklin is 9-2 after losing their second game this season on Monday against Swain, but rebounded on Tuesday with a 3-0 win over Asheville.
Tuscola was never really in the match, losing the first game 25-8. Both the second and third games ended up 25-10.
Enka got plenty of help in scoring from the big dogs up front. Lauren Hall and Rachel Olivo both got 7 kills, with Olivo getting a team high 4 blocks. Katie Dawson, Rebekah McCarson and Kirstyn Burleson had 3 kills each.
"We were able to play some of the girls that normally don’t get to play much tonight," said the Sugar Jets Sue Moon. "We tried a few different things tonight. We’re looking forward to Thursday night. Our girls are playing well right now."
The back line of the Sugar Jets don’t get much publicity, but two girls, Anna Smart and Kirstie Hyatt, in particular share a lot in the success of the team. Both of them play libero, which until this year, didn’t allow the libero to serve.
"If you don’t pass the ball to the front good, they can’t get a good hit," said Smart. "I like playing the back line, a lot of what happens depends on me and the others. I’m not worried about not getting the points. As long as the team wins, that’s what counts."
Hyatt likes the change to be able to serve.

"I love it," said Hyatt, who’s played it since middle school. "It’s tough to be out there playing and not be able to serve. Last year, Katie Duncan was a good server, but when she was the libero, she couldn’t serve."
Hyatt finished the night with 14 digs and two aces.
Enka has only lost one game this season since the season has started. It was against Pisgah in a 3-1 win. All cylinders are clicking right now and Thursday’s game is sure to be a barn burner as the two top teams in the MAC go head to head.
