–Lady Cougars’ claim 4 of top 10 spots to win Owen Invitational

BLACK MOUNTAIN - September 18, 2007 - What a difference a week makes! 

After a disappointing second place finish at the Buncombe County Invitational, the Lady Cougars cross-country team came to Black Mountain with something to prove, and the team did just that.  Led by Cara Haynes first place finish, Asheville took four of the top ten spots to take the Owen Invitaional at Black Mountain Recreation Park. "It felt good to come back and have a great run today," said Haynes on her 19:40 performance, after the runner-up finish at the Buncombe County Invitational last week.

 Charlotte Country Day’s Melanie Reyer suprised everyone with her second place finish, just edging out Tuscola’s Megan McLeod by a few hundreths of a second. 

Asheville’s Sophia Treakle finished fourth with a time of 20:34. Polk County’s Elizabeth Elliot finished fifth, coming in six seconds after Treakle at 20:40. Asheville’s Kelsey Hanger and Hendersonville’s Kristin Stout were neck-and-neck coming down the stretch, with Hanger winning by a single second.

Asheville’s 47 points overall were almost 80 points less than second place finisher, Asheville School, who were paced by Jessica Goodman’s eighth place finish with 124 points.  Third and Fourth place were separated by only 4 points with Reynolds earning 142 points for third and Hendersonville finished fourth with 146 points, edging Enka by just two points.

Despite the second place finish by Reyer, Charlotte Country Day would finish sixth, two points ahead of host Owen.  Asheville Christian Academy, Tuscola and Polk Country rounded out the top ten team finishes.
