–Owen scores 23 unanswered in rout of East Henderson

BLACK MOUNTAIN - September 7, 2007 - In 2005, the Eagles of East Henderson lit up the Owen Warhorses 29-0 with four Michael Angram touchdowns, while last year the Eagles fed off an outstanding performance by Michael Corbett to beat Owen 31-21.
This year, however, the Eagles struggled to find offense from anyone as the Warhorses defeated East 23-3. The win marked the first for Owen against East Henderson since the Warhorses’ 3-0 victory in 1975. “They were moving on us early and I was afraid they might turn it into a track meet,” said Owen coach Kenny Ford. “We wanted to keep the ball out of their hands from there, and that’s what we did.”
The Eagles’ first play from scrimmage, a 45 yard pass from Chase Hill to Rakim Waters, put them in position to score at the Owen 23. However, the Owen defense didn’t allow the Eagles to gain another yard in the drive after a big sack by Seth
Blankenship and an incomplete pass on 4th down gave the Warhorses possession.
The Eagle defense then put up a stand of
their own, forcing a three-and-out and causing Owen to lose 16 total yards on their opening drive.
Following the Owen punt, East’s offense drove from their own 43 to the Owen 17, but were stuffed again after an incomplete pass, a sack by Julian Martín and a tackle for loss by Blankenship forced the Eagles to settle for a 41 yard field goal by Andy Fisher.
East Henderson maintained the lead until the early portion of the second quarter when Dion Wilson capped a 65 yard drive with a one yard run to give Owen a 7-3 lead.
Owen then forced a three-and-out on East’s next drive, and ate up almost five minutes of the second quarter on 79 yard drive
that ended with Aaron Reese scoring from two yards out to give Owen a 13-3 lead after a missed extra point.
The Warhorses received the ball once more in the first half, starting at their own 18 with just 1:13 remaining. After a couple of short yardage runs, Reese broke free on a QB keeper and was dragged down 53 yards later at the East 23 with 0:11 remaining.
The Warhorses failed to reach the end zone, but Reese’s 41 yard field goal attempt split the uprights with only inches to spare to increase Owen’s lead to 16-3 at halftime.
“Our defense really stepped up and stopped them after the first quarter,” said Reese. “And when we can make them go three-and-out and score, it really helps us out.”
Owen opened the second half with possession, and after driving 36 yards to the East 34, the Warhorses faced a critical 4th and 8. Coming up big once again was Reese, who got the first down and more with a 29 yard run that gave Owen a 1st and
goal on the East 5.
Two plays later, Wilson scored his second touchdown of the game from four yards out to end Owen’s six minute, 70 yard drive.
The East Henderson offense, which managed only 27 rushing yards in the first half, continued to struggle for the duration of the second half, amassing only 56 total yards.
“They really outplayed us all the way though,” said East Henderson coach Brett Chappell. “They just did whatever they wanted to with us.”
The two teams stalemated in the 4th quarter, with neither team reaching the red zone.
“I’m very disappointed in how we played tonight,” Chappell added. “We’ve got a lot to fix if we’re going to beat Hendersonville next week.”
The Warhorses (2-1, 0-0) will travel to Enka next week while East Henderson (2-2, 0-0) will host their game against Hendersonville.
