–Metts spreading things out at North Buncombe
7 August 2007By Michael Painter-Editor
WEAVERVILLE - August 6, 2007 - North Buncombe Head Coach Carey Metts has got the ultimate goal in mind when talking about this years football team. That goal is being 3-A State Champion. With an abundance of juniors in the Hawks aviary that played as sophomores last year, Metts knows he has a young, but experienced team. He also is changing his offense and defense to take advantage of his team’s speed and quickness.
Randy Pressley, a junior this year, is back as the signal caller and he will be asked to lead the Black Hawks. Despite having small numbers, Metts believes that this might be their year to go far in the playoffs.
Last week, PREPalert.com meet with Coach Meets after a morning practice to talk about his team.
Q: You have a young group this year. How many kids do you have this year?
A: We have 30 kids this year, but we have five who aren’t in camp yet. We can do it with 30, that’s enough, but we would like to have 35. When I played at Reynolds, we only played with 32. We have 19 juniors on the team this year and most of the kids have a lot of experience. We’re faster, stronger and quicker. Our middle school program has gotten better. With this group we should to be in the top two instead of at the bottom.
Q: With a player like Randy Pressley, how do you plan on utilizing his athletic ability?
A: He will be used primarily on offense at quarterback and try to limit him on defense to third and long and when we need him. He got hurt last year playing defense and missed the last few games. He’s one of the best athletes on the field and he’s grown up a ton since last year. Going into the season, knowing that he is the starter, he is a lot more comfortable than last year.
Q: The three Nallenweg kids are no longer with the team. Where did they transfer to?
A: All three have moved and transferred to Erwin.
Q: Who do you have coming back this year?
A: On offense, along with Randy, we have Christian West at tailback and Alex Ingle at wide receiver. West is a versatile runner and Ingle has good hands and speed.
On the defensive side of the ball, sophomores Zack Moseley and Devon Taylor, will start at inside linebacker and middle linebacker. We have some no-shows also. Five of our guys aren’t in camp right now. Two senior starters are having to work this week and two brothers from Chicago along with one guy from Houston are moving into the area.
One of our JV’s from last year, sophomore quarterback John Brazil, didn’t have a strong arm last year, but he really improved in the off-season and he will back up Randy this year.
Q: Any changes with the coaching staff this year?
A: We have no changes with the varsity, but we now have a full time JV staff. Randy Campbell, Gary Massey, Greg McFee and Chris Winger will work as the coaches this year. We have about 40 kids out for JV’s.
Q: How about your offense and defense, how many starters do you have coming back what are you going to run this year?
A: On offense we have 8 or 9 back and we’re switching to the spread offense. It really suits us with the speed and quickness we have.
On the defensive side of the ball we will have about 7 or 8 coming back. We’re running a 3-5 defense this year with different variations.
We’ll have five kids going both ways, with
Q: The MAC is very competitive. What do you need to do to be in contention at the top of the heap come November?
A: By building each other up with encouragement. The conference is up in the air. The defense did an adequate job last year, but we also need to put points on the board if we’re going to win.
